Yukinori Yanagi 1959 -
Selection by Osamu Ikeda, former director of BankART1929
In the early 1990s, Yanagi began presenting his "Ant Farm Series," which focuses on the construction of ant nests, and in 1995, he became the first Japanese artist to win the Aperto Prize at the 45th Venice Biennale, attracting attention both domestically and internationally. He has taken up various social issues, such as displacement, border crossing and nations, and has turned them into works with a sense of humor. He has been created a variety of projects, including the "Inujima Seirensho Art Museum" (2008), which combines the remains of a copper refinery on Inujima Island in the Seto Inland Sea with architecture and artworks, and the art gallery project of Sumiya Kiho-an, a renovated traditional Japanese ryokan in Kyoto (2021), etc. He also organizes since 2012 "ART BASE MOMOSHIMA," which attempts to revitalize remote islands through production with collaborators.
