Born 1939 in Guimarães, Portugal. Lives and works in Lisbon and Paris.
An artist with a diverse range of expression from picture books and character design to public art.
During his stay in Angola as an archaeologist in the 1960s and 1970s, he was influenced by the symbolism of African art and became an artist, creating works permeated with different visual expressions from Europe and Africa. His works are in the collections of museums around the world, and as a national artist representing Portugal, he has been involved in numerous national projects, including the design of characters for the Lisbon Expo and creating monuments to commemorate the return of Macau to China. With his use of vivid colors and unique character expressions, he has also been involved in signage projects for the Miyagi Prefectural Library, Echigo-Tsumari, and Setouchi Triennale.
代官山アドレスのアートワーク 2000年に作られ、現在も地域住民に親しまれている。
また、鮮やかな色使いと独特なキャラクター表現により、宮城県図書館、越後妻有、瀬戸内国際芸術祭のサイン計画も手がける。絵本、キャラクターデザインからパブリックアートまで多彩な表現ができるアーティストである。2011年、欧州文化首都となるギマランイスに、彼の作品と彼自身のアフリカ美術コレクションをおさめた美術館、JOSÉ DE GUIMARÃESインターナショナルアーツセンターがポルトガル政府とギマランイス市の共同出資により設立され、現在も展覧会などの美術活動を行っている。
越後妻有のサイン計画として、2003年に50基を超える「トーテム」をギマランイスがデザインした。 エリアごとの動物などのシンボルを入れ込んだカラフルなサインとなった。
妻有のトーテムを制作するギマランイス
1960-70 年代のアンゴラ滞在を経て、アフリカ民族学の専門家との交流を通じて、アフリカの芸術の持つ象徴性に影響を受けたというギマランイス。ヨーロッパとアフリカの異なる表現が融合したようなユーモラスな形態が特徴的だ。作家自身のコレクションでもあるアフリカのアートとの関わりも見え隠れするし、ピカソの新古典主義の時代のふくよかな人間たちの身体を連想させるような版画もある。

アフリカのアートを好んで集めていたギマランイスだが、この作品は、南米の先住民の横顔をモチーフにしている。"Guaranis" と題されているのは主にパラナ川からパラグアイ川にかけてのラ・プラタ地域グアラニー族の女性と見られ、ネオンで緑色に光る。早くからネオンのアートに精通し、独特のスタイルを確率したギマランイスらしい作品。
