Born in 1965 in Germany. Currently based in Berlin.
In addition to visual art, Nicolai produces electronic music under the name Alva Noto. In 1999 he founded the record label "raster-noton", and has released numerous solo experimental music recordings while also collaborating with Ryuichi Sakamoto, with Ryoji Ikeda as "cyclo", and with many other musicians, to international acclaim. In addition to solo exhibitions around the world, Nicolai has participated in many international exhibitions including Documenta X (1997) and the 49th and 50th Venice Biennale (1999, 2001). Aiming to synthesize artistic formats and approaches, he applies science and mathematics to create works in diverse genres.
