We are pleased to announce that, eighteen years since its inauguration, the 7th Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale will be held over 51 days from 29 July 2018.

Since 2000, Isobe has been presenting artworks visualizing the characteristics of specific places, such as the series of four artworks featuring the Shinanogawa river including “Where Has the River Gone,” as well as “Monument of Mudslide,” and has been deeply engaged with the festival, helping to provide its conceptual backbone.

This new wing of the warehouse museum will be a place to present his multi-angled artworks. As the framework of the ‘warehouse museum’ is developed, we expect that the museum will become one of the key hub facilities which will attract many visitors.
This exhibition will consist of a diverse range of artworks by Isobe, arranged chronologically from his early era of ‘relief’ works to ones created during the “Wappen Period”; environmental works; and works during the transitional period as well as “Ecological Planning”; the survey of the environment of Echigo-Tsumari conducted in 1999; and documentations of a series of artworks for Echigo-Tsumari, including photographs, drawings, documentation and a georama of the river terraces of the Shinanogawa river. This time we produced a video where Isobe revealed his long career for the first time. We hope you will enjoy experiencing this glimpse of “the world of Yukihisa Isobe” from 1950s to the present day.

Also on view is Island in the Tidal Current exhibited in Setouchi Triennale in 2013 or the “Floating Sculpture” created in 1969 during the time Isobe was based in America, a period during which he started to pursue activities related to environment. During this time Isobe created many artworks exploring wind or air, including this project that used the ever-changing forms of a parachute.
It was shown in various ways, such as being flown outdoors, or indoors with images projected on its surface. Close to fifty years since the first version, this artwork aims to re-present the Floating Sculpture 2018, returning to the point of origin of Isobe’s artistic engagement with the environment.
